GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalan authorities
say a California man died when his small plane
crashed in a mountainous region in the western
part of the Central American country.
Civil Aeronautics spokeswoman Monica Monge
says Thomas Gilbert Rusel was killed when the
plane went down Monday in Xetuck, 93 miles
from Guatemala City. No hometown was
released.
Dr. Susana Pajoc says a 29-year-old American
passenger, Helen Cernick, suffered non-life-
threatening injuries in the crash. The doctor says
documents recovered with the dead pilot indicate
he was 65.
The cause of the crash is unknown.
Monge says the plane departed from the Pacific
coastal city of Monterrico bound for Santiago
Atitlan, on the banks of Lake Atitlan.
